“Construction drawings” (Architect) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2020 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2029.
What this task is
Once a design is fixed, architects produce detailed plans, sections, elevations, construction details and coordination sets that contractors build from. It is a large volume of drafting work.
How AI replaces it
BIM spread from around 2020, generating plans and sections directly from 3D models, and AI now helps with auto-annotation, detail generation and clash detection. Most construction drawing work should be software-produced by about 2029.
What stays human
Architects design key details, coordinate structural and MEP disciplines, and review drawing sets. Their focus shifts from drafting line by line to managing BIM models and controlling the quality of what goes to site.
