What this task is
Servers introduce the menu and daily specials, write down each table's order, confirm allergies and taste preferences, and pass the order on to the kitchen.
How AI replaces it
QR-code ordering lets diners browse the menu, order and add notes on their phones, sending orders straight to the kitchen; it spread from 2016 and accelerated during the pandemic. By 2023 most casual restaurants barely needed staff to take orders.
What stays human
Servers still take orders in fine dining or when diners want recommendations, and they help older guests or anyone else who finds ordering on a phone difficult.
