Delivering food to tables
“Delivering food to tables” (Restaurant Server) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2019 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2030.
What this task is
Servers carry finished dishes from the kitchen pass to the right table, check them against the order and name each dish as they serve it, walking back and forth all shift.
How AI replaces it
Food-delivery robots navigate dining rooms with lidar and cameras, avoiding obstacles and delivering by table number; they appeared widely in hot-pot and chain restaurants from 2019. As layouts adapt and costs fall, most restaurants are expected to rely on robots for food runs around 2030.
What stays human
Servers move dishes from the robot to the table and introduce them, and they take over in crowded areas or when guests have special needs the robot cannot handle.
