What this task is
Servers print the bill, go through items with diners, take cash or card payments, make change, apply coupons and issue receipts or invoices on request.
How AI replaces it
Diners scan a table QR code to view the bill and pay by phone, and the system reconciles and issues receipts automatically; this spread through restaurants from 2015. By 2022 most restaurants no longer needed servers to handle checkout.
What stays human
Servers still sort out billing disputes and discounts and help diners who need assistance, spending more of their time on table service and looking after guests.
