“Clearing tables” (Restaurant Server) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2026 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2035.
What this task is
After diners leave, servers collect dishes, clear scraps, wipe the table and chairs and reset the place settings; how fast tables turn over limits how many guests a restaurant can serve at peak.
How AI replaces it
Bussing robots can carry tableware back to the dish area, but picking up varied dishes and leftovers and wiping tables requires dexterous manipulation, so scaled trials only begin in 2026. As robot arms and vision grasping mature, most table clearing could be automated around 2035.
What stays human
Staff handle detailed wiping, table setting and rush-hour turnover, keep an eye on the robots, and step in quickly whenever a machine gets stuck or makes a mistake.
