Urban driving (robotaxi)
Driver · Taxi / Ride-hailing Driver
“Urban driving (robotaxi)” (Driver) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2020 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2033.
What this task is
Taxi and ride-hail drivers carry passengers through busy city streets, constantly dealing with traffic lights, pedestrians, cyclists, double-parked vehicles, roadworks, unclear lane markings and complex intersections.
How AI replaces it
Since 2020, L4 robotaxis such as Waymo have operated without drivers in some cities. Urban driving is complex and limited by regulation, cost and rare edge cases, so replacing human drivers in most cities is expected around 2033.
What stays human
Drivers may move into remote assistance roles, fleet maintenance or customer service for robotaxi operators, or keep driving in areas and conditions that autonomous services do not yet cover.
