Clerks read printed forms, invoices and receipts and type fields such as names, amounts and dates into a computer system by hand, one entry after another.
How AI replaces it
From 2012, optical character recognition (OCR) combined with layout templates could read printed text and fill the matching fields automatically. As accuracy overtook manual keying, printed-form entry was largely automated by 2020.
