Last-mile delivery
Warehousing & Delivery · Courier
“Last-mile delivery” (Warehousing & Delivery) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2023 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2033.
What this task is
Couriers carry parcels from the local depot to each recipient: planning routes, climbing stairs, calling customers and getting signatures at the door. It is the most labor-intensive link in the delivery chain.
How AI replaces it
Since 2023, low-speed autonomous delivery vehicles have operated at scale in campuses and suburbs, parcel lockers absorb many drop-offs, and drones serve remote areas in pilots. As road rules and vehicle costs settle, most last-mile delivery is expected to leave human hands around 2033.
What stays human
Door-to-door delivery in difficult buildings, high-value items needing verification, and confusing addresses still need people; couriers move toward depot management, fleet dispatch and exception handling.
