What this task is
At regional sorting hubs, parcels arriving from many origins are scanned, split by destination and routed onto the right outbound line before being loaded onto trucks for the next leg.
How AI replaces it
Cross-belt and pop-up wheel sorters, combined with automatic barcode reading and dimensioning, spread through large hubs from 2015 and handle tens of thousands of parcels per hour. By around 2023 sorting at major hubs no longer relied mainly on manual labor.
What stays human
Remaining staff handle oversized, irregular or damaged parcels, monitor and maintain the sorting equipment, and coordinate truck loading, so the role shifts toward equipment maintenance and floor supervision.
