What this task is
Pickers walk up and down warehouse aisles to find and pull the items for each order, often covering many kilometers over the course of a single shift.
How AI replaces it
From 2015, AGV robots began bringing whole shelves or totes to fixed picking stations, so workers no longer walk to the goods. By 2025, large e-commerce and logistics warehouses had largely adopted goods-to-person systems.
What stays human
Pickers now take and check items at fixed workstations instead of walking the aisles, and some move into roles supervising robot fleets and maintaining the equipment.
