What this task is
Cashiers take cash or card payments at the counter, make change, check amounts and print receipts, then count the till and reconcile it against system records at the end of a shift.
How AI replaces it
QR-code and contactless mobile payments turned paying into something customers do themselves, spreading rapidly in China from 2014 and sharply cutting cash handling. By 2020 taking payment itself barely required a person.
What stays human
Cashiers still help with payment failures, refunds and older customers who need assistance paying, and their focus is shifting toward customer service, restocking and general store operations.
