How AI replaces it
AI video analytics can flag unscanned items at self-checkout, concealment and other suspicious actions in real time, and chains began deploying it from 2020. As false alarms fall, most routine monitoring is expected to be handled by systems around 2028.
What stays human
Approaching a customer and resolving a suspected theft still needs a person; staff focus on verifying system alerts, handling disputes calmly and working with police when needed.
