What this task is
Pathologists combine tissue morphology, immunostains, molecular tests and clinical information into a final pathology diagnosis and sign it; that diagnosis often determines which treatment the patient receives.
How AI replaces it
Pathology is often the definitive diagnosis, and the signer carries legal and professional liability; rules require a licensed physician's signature. AI is expected to offer integrated diagnostic suggestions from about 2030, taking on most sign-off work only around 2038.
What stays human
Pathologists remain the accountable signers of each report, take part in tumor boards and multidisciplinary meetings, and explain the basis of their diagnoses to the treating clinicians.
