Initial slide screening
Radiologist / Pathologist · Pathologist
“Initial slide screening” (Radiologist / Pathologist) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2021 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2029.
What this task is
Screening large numbers of pathology slides or cervical smears to locate suspicious areas, clearing the clearly negative ones and passing positive or uncertain slides to senior pathologists for review.
How AI replaces it
Since 2021, AI whole-slide analysis has been used for cervical cytology and lymph-node metastasis, marking and ranking suspicious regions. As slide scanners become standard, initial screening is expected to be mainly AI-driven by 2029.
What stays human
Pathologists review the slides AI flags as suspicious along with difficult cases, and they run quality control, including spot checks for anything the AI may have missed.
