“Prescription review” (Pharmacist) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2019 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2028.
What this task is
Pharmacists check whether each prescription is appropriate, looking at dose, incompatibilities, drug interactions, allergies and special populations such as children or pregnant women, and send it back when changes are needed.
How AI replaces it
Since 2019, medication-safety systems have blocked inappropriate prescriptions using knowledge-base rules, and newer AI also weighs lab results and records. By around 2028, routine prescription review is expected to be largely automated.
What stays human
Pharmacists resolve the complex alerts the system raises, talk with prescribers about adjusting treatment, and help write and maintain the rules the review system follows.
