What this task is

Pharmacy staff pick medicines from shelves according to prescriptions, check drug and quantity, package them and hand them to patients or wards with basic instructions.

How AI replaces it

From 2015, hospitals began installing automated pharmacy systems, including box-dispensing machines, unit-dose packagers and smart cabinets that pick and pack by prescription. By around 2027, most dispensing is expected to be done by machines.

What stays human

Pharmacists handle special medications that machines cannot, check unusual or problematic prescriptions, and redirect their time toward prescription review and counseling patients on how to take their medicines.
