What this task is
A switchboard operator answers calls to an organization, asks who or which department the caller wants, and manually connects the call to the right extension.
How AI replaces it
From around 2005, digital exchanges and automated attendants let callers dial extensions directly or follow voice prompts. By 2012 most organizations no longer had dedicated staff transferring calls by hand.
What stays human
A few reception staff still transfer calls when callers don't know who to ask or need help, usually as part of a broader front-desk role.
