What this task is
Directory assistance operators look up phone numbers for businesses or people that callers name and read them out, as in classic 411 or 114 services that were once widely used.
How AI replaces it
From 2008, search engines, smartphone contacts and online maps let people find numbers themselves at any time, and demand collapsed. By 2015 human directory assistance had largely dropped out of everyday use.
What stays human
What remains mainly serves older people and others who don't use the internet, and former operators have mostly moved into general information and help-line roles.
