What this task is
On automotive and machinery lines, assembly workers spot-weld and arc-weld car bodies and steel parts, and spray primer and topcoat in paint booths, amid heat, fumes and solvents.
How AI replaces it
Welding and painting are repetitive and hazardous, a natural fit for articulated industrial robots. Automakers and others adopted them at scale from around 2005, and by 2015 body and paint shops on mainstream lines were largely automated.
What stays human
People still handle small batches, complex seams and touch-up repairs; many welders and painters became robot programmers, maintenance technicians or quality inspectors on the same lines.
