“Visual defect inspection” (Production Line Worker) was largely replaced by AI in 2024, after AI entered in 2016.
What this task is
Inspectors stand beside the line checking product surfaces by eye or under magnification for scratches, stains, chips and color variations, pulling out defective units before they ship.
How AI replaces it
Deep-learning vision systems can be trained on relatively few samples to recognize many defect types, spreading through displays, electronics and textiles from 2016. By around 2024 most lines relied on AI for visual inspection, with humans only double-checking.
What stays human
Inspectors label defect samples for training, review borderline cases the model is unsure about, and trace defect patterns back to the process problems causing them.
