What this task is
Quality inspectors measure machined and molded parts with calipers, micrometers and coordinate measuring machines, checking each dimension against drawing tolerances and recording the results for traceability.
How AI replaces it
Laser scanners, structured-light and machine-vision gauging systems can inspect every part inline, faster and more consistently than manual sampling. They spread through automotive and electronics from 2012, and most routine dimensional checks were automated by 2020.
What stays human
Inspectors now design measurement plans, calibrate and maintain gauging equipment, analyze trend data, and decide what to do with out-of-tolerance parts and the processes that made them.
