Driverless port and mining trucks
What this task is
Driving container trucks or mining haul trucks along fixed routes inside ports, mines and other closed sites, moving containers, ore and earth around the clock.
How AI replaces it
Closed sites have fixed routes and no public traffic, making them well suited to autonomy. Driverless port and mining trucks began commercial operation from 2018 and are expected to be standard at large ports and mines by 2027.
What stays human
Former drivers become remote monitors, dispatchers and maintenance technicians, stepping in whenever the autonomous system encounters an obstacle, fault or situation it cannot handle on its own.
