“Wall sanding” (Construction Worker) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2021 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2031.
What this task is
In the finishing phase, workers sand plastered walls and ceilings smooth with sandpaper or power sanders before painting. It is dusty, repetitive, physically tiring work.
How AI replaces it
Since about 2021, wall-sanding robots with vision positioning and built-in dust extraction have appeared on large housing projects, following planned paths over whole walls. As costs fall and contractors want consistent finishes, most bulk sanding should be machine-done by around 2031.
What stays human
Workers shift to running and watching over the sanding robots, touching up corners and irregular areas by hand, and judging from experience whether surfaces are flat enough to paint. The job becomes more technical and less physically punishing.
