What this task is
Adjusters check submitted claim paperwork, such as policies, invoices, medical records and police reports, for completeness and authenticity, then compare it line by line against policy terms to decide whether the claim qualifies.
How AI replaces it
From 2017, OCR began extracting data from documents while rule engines matched it against policy terms and calculated payouts, enabling straight-through processing for small claims. By 2024, standardized document review was largely handled by these systems, with humans seeing only flagged exceptions.
What stays human
Adjusters now focus on ambiguous, high-value or disputed claims that systems route out, explain denials to customers, and help maintain and tune the review rules.
