Literary translation
Translator · Written Translation (General)
“Literary translation” (Translator) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2024 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2033.
What this task is
Translating novels, poetry and essays so that the result is not only accurate but also recreates the original author's voice, rhythm, rhetoric and cultural resonance for new readers.
How AI replaces it
From 2024, style-aware LLMs could produce readable literary drafts and imitate a requested voice. Long-form consistency, wordplay and cultural allusion remain hard, and publishers expect a named translator, so majority automation is expected only around 2033.
What stays human
Literary translators increasingly act as stylistic editors and re-creators, polishing AI drafts line by line and answering for the artistic quality of the finished work.
