Conference simultaneous interpreting
Translator · Interpreting
“Conference simultaneous interpreting” (Translator) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2022 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2030.
What this task is
At international conferences and forums, interpreters in a booth listen to speakers through headphones and render the speech into another language for the audience almost in real time.
How AI replaces it
From 2022, end-to-end speech translation models could turn speech in one language directly into speech or captions in another, and some events adopted them. Jargon, accents and reliability demands mean majority automation is expected around 2030.
What stays human
Human interpreters remain for diplomatic and top-level meetings, and also prepare terminology lists and monitor the quality of machine interpreting while events are running.
