“Parking fees” (Toll Collector) was largely replaced by AI in 2021, after AI entered in 2015.
What this task is
Parking attendants staffed entrances and exits, logging each car, working out time and fees, taking cash or cards and lifting the gate, which often caused queues at busy times.
How AI replaces it
License-plate recognition cameras log entry and exit times, and the system charges through mobile payment or linked accounts without stopping. This spread quickly from 2015, and by around 2021 most parking lots no longer needed a person to collect fees.
What stays human
Remaining staff handle misread plates, payment disputes and broken barriers or cameras, and some have moved into parking-lot operations, on-site patrols or remote help-desk roles.
