Inventory counts
Retail Worker · Sales Associate / Stocker
“Inventory counts” (Retail Worker) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2019 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2027.
What this task is
Store staff periodically count items on shelves and in the stockroom, reconcile counts against system records, and look for out-of-stocks, misplaced goods, wrong price tags and expiring products.
How AI replaces it
Shelf-scanning robots and fixed cameras use computer vision to count products and check placement, while RFID tags allow bulk reads; large stores piloted these from 2019. As costs fall, most stores are expected to stop manual counting around 2027.
What stays human
Staff restock and fix displays based on system alerts, deal with items the system cannot recognize, and investigate why physical stock and recorded stock disagree when gaps appear.
