What this task is
Operations engineers push new code versions to servers: packaging, uploading, shifting traffic and rolling back when something fails, work that was often done by hand late at night.

From around 2015, CI/CD pipelines and container orchestration made releases, canary rollouts and rollbacks one-click or fully automatic. By 2023, manual deployments had largely disappeared.

Engineers now design and maintain the release pipelines, set rollout and rollback policies, and step in for the failures that automation can't resolve on its own.
