What this task is
Nurses check each medicine against the doctor's order, the patient's identity and the dose, and move drugs from the pharmacy to wards and patients, guarding against medication errors.
How AI replaces it
Since 2016, barcode scanning has matched patient wristbands to medications, while delivery robots and pneumatic tubes transport drugs. By around 2027, checking and delivery are expected to be largely automated.
What stays human
Nurses still administer each medication themselves, watch patients closely for reactions afterward, and resolve the mismatches and unusual situations that the barcode verification system flags for human attention.
