Paralegals search for statutes, regulations, judicial interpretations and comparable rulings that bear on a case's disputed issues, then summarize the authorities and holdings a lawyer can cite.
How AI replaces it
From 2017, legal databases added semantic search and similar-case recommendations, and legal research AI now answers plain-language questions with sourced summaries. By 2024, routine research was mostly done by these tools.
What stays human
Paralegals and lawyers verify that citations are accurate and current, judge whether a precedent really applies to the facts at hand, and turn raw search results into arguments tailored to the case.
