“Writing medical notes” (General Practitioner) is being replaced by AI: it entered in 2023 and is projected to be largely replaced by 2027.
What this task is
After each visit, doctors write up the medical note covering symptoms, examination, diagnosis, tests ordered and prescriptions, a task that takes up a large share of clinic time.
How AI replaces it
From 2023, AI documentation assistants began listening to visits or dictation and producing compliant outpatient notes. By around 2027, most note drafts are expected to come from AI, with doctors reviewing and signing.
What stays human
Doctors spend the time saved on talking with patients and explaining their conditions, while remaining responsible for checking that AI-generated notes are accurate and complete.
