What this task is
Dentists read periapical, panoramic and CBCT images to find decay, root infections, bone loss and impacted teeth, and use those findings to plan each patient's treatment.
How AI replaces it
Since 2019, dental imaging AI has automatically marked decay, bone loss and root canals and produced preliminary reports. With more products approved, routine X-ray reading is expected to be largely AI-done by 2027.
What stays human
Dentists confirm what the AI has marked, combine it with the clinical examination to reach a diagnosis, and use the annotated images to explain problems to patients.
